Educational Inclusion of students with Special Educational Needs and additional learning needs

Ms O'Callaghan, Special Educational Needs Co-ordinatorAt Ennis Community College and Gaelcholáiste an Chláir, we aim to offer excellence and choice to all pupils, whatever their ability or needs. We believe in having high expectations of all pupils and aim to help pupils achieve their best by removing any potential barriers to learning and participation. In our curricular provision we understand that pupils:

  • Have different educational and behavioral needs and aspirations
  • Require different strategies for learning
  • Acquire, assimilate and communicate information at different rates
  • Need a range of different teaching approaches and experiences

Teachers and other support staff respond to pupils’ needs by:

  • Providing support for pupils who need help with communication, language and literacy
  • Planning to develop pupils’ understanding through the use of multi-sensory approaches and varied experiences
  • Planning for pupils’ full participation in learning, and in physical and practical activities
  • Helping pupils to manage their behaviour and to take part in learning safely and effectively
  • Helping individuals to manage their emotions, particularly trauma or stress, and to take part in learning.

The Resource Department has recently been granted permission by the Department of Education to open a special support class for students with a diagnosis of Mild General Learning Disability. This class offers a unique learning and nurturing environment, with its own timetable and specially designed curriculum but while also allowing these students access to mainstream, practical subjects and to state examinations.

The Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator is Linda O’Callaghan and enquiries about provision for SEN or additional learning needs are very welcome.
